Holiday Guide 2012: Small Business Saturday in Chicago's Western Suburbs

I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving, full of great food and great times with family and friends. Tomorrow marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season, and like a lot of you, I've made an effort the last few years to do much of my shopping at locally-owned stores. In response to "Black Friday," there is now a movement called "Small Business Saturday," held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, to urge consumers to support local small businesses.

Eliza Jane in St. Charles will have an artist in the store on Saturday doing custom silhouette portraits.Any purchases you make at a small business during the next month are good ones. But here are a few places that are doing something special for Small Business Saturday, as well as a number of small businesses that were mentioned by readers in a post I did on Facebook on this topic. Also, American Express is a sponsor of the official Small Business Saturday movement. if you register your American Express card, you can get a one-time $25 credit when you shop at a quality small business location on Saturday.

Happy Shopping!

  • Eliza Jane, on Main Street in downtown St. Charles, is hosting "Cool Cut Outs: Custom Silhouette Portraits." Local artist Cassidy Alexander will be in the store making custom silhouettes of your children. Cassidy will be there from noon to 5 p.m. The cost is $24 for an original silhouette portrait; $10 for a duplicate; and $21 for a sibling. Each sitting only takes about five minutes. Reserve your spot by calling the store at 630-457-1821 or emailing shopelizajane@gmail.com.
  • Peaceful Parlour, on Third Street in downtown Geneva, is hosting an "Eat, Drink, Shop, Save & Win" event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be homemade pumpkin bread, Peaceful Synergy tea, a raffle for a gift certificate and you'll enjoy 20 percent off one regularly-priced item in the store.
  • Amy McTeague of McTeague Photography will be I offering 25 holidays cards, or an 8x10 and 5x7 set of prints, with each full session booked on Small Business Saturday.
