I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving, full of great food and great times with family and friends. Tomorrow marks the official start of the Christmas shopping season, and like a lot of you, I've made an effort the last few years to do much of my shopping at locally-owned stores. In response to "Black Friday," there is now a movement called "Small Business Saturday," held the Saturday after Thanksgiving, to urge consumers to support local small businesses.
Any purchases you make at a small business during the next month are good ones. But here are a few places that are doing something special for Small Business Saturday, as well as a number of small businesses that were mentioned by readers in a post I did on Facebook on this topic. Also, American Express is a sponsor of the official Small Business Saturday movement. if you register your American Express card, you can get a one-time $25 credit when you shop at a quality small business location on Saturday.
- Eliza Jane, on Main Street in downtown St. Charles, is hosting "Cool Cut Outs: Custom Silhouette Portraits." Local artist Cassidy Alexander will be in the store making custom silhouettes of your children. Cassidy will be there from noon to 5 p.m. The cost is $24 for an original silhouette portrait; $10 for a duplicate; and $21 for a sibling. Each sitting only takes about five minutes. Reserve your spot by calling the store at 630-457-1821 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
- Peaceful Parlour, on Third Street in downtown Geneva, is hosting an "Eat, Drink, Shop, Save & Win" event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. There will be homemade pumpkin bread, Peaceful Synergy tea, a raffle for a gift certificate and you'll enjoy 20 percent off one regularly-priced item in the store.
- Amy McTeague of McTeague Photography will be I offering 25 holidays cards, or an 8x10 and 5x7 set of prints, with each full session booked on Small Business Saturday.
