Last weekend, the calendar was sort of light. But that's not a trend. In addition to these events, look for a guide to Mother's Day-related activities later today. (Some craft events are scheduled as soon as tomorrow.) Also, there are a couple big garage sales scheduled this weekend - check out the Garage Sales & More page for details. And of course, as usual, make sure to check the Go West Calendar for events that might better fit your family's interests, schedule or budget.
GO GREEN: The fourth annual Elgin's Green Expo is being held at the Centre on Elgin on Friday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and organizers promise a family-friendly event, including a farmer's market; garden area; activities for kids; a 5,000-gallon aquarium stocked with Fox River fish; canoe and pontoon trips; and a big petting zoo.
BOGO GOLF: Miniature golf season has returned! The Stone Creek Miniature Golf course in Geneva's Wheeler Park reopens for the season on Friday night at 6 p.m. In honor of opening day, you can buy one round and receive one free. The course is owned and operated by the Geneva Park District. Until longer hours go into effect on May 28, it will be open on Fridays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
COUGARS AT HOME: The Kane County Cougars are hosting the Peoria Chiefs Thursday at 6 p.m. and Friday at 6:30 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for the last game in the series. The Cougars are then away for a few days before returning to Geneva to host the Clinton Lumberkings starting Wednesday, May 9.
CLASSIC MUSICALS: Christian Youth Theater has a busy week. Its Aurora branch will be performing "Robin Hood: The Musical" a number of times at the Oswego East High School Performing Arts Center, and its DuPage branch will be offering up "Music Man Jr." at Timothy Christian School Auditorium in Elmhurst. Tickets in advance for both shows are $12 for adults and $9 for seniors and children. Add $2 if you purchase them at the door.
CRAFTY KIDS: The monthly "Kids Workshop" at Home Depot is Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at its stores in Geneva, Aurora, South Elgin and more. This month, kids ages 5 to 12 can build a planter box, then paint and add embellishments, too. The workshop is free and no registration is required.
AHOY!: The new animated movie "Pirates! Band of Misfits" will be shown on Saturday morning as part of the AMC Sensory-Friendly Film Series at theaters in Naperville, Lombard and South Barrington. It's also the choice for the "Lights Up, Sound Down" series at Goodrich Quality Theaters in Batavia and Oswego, also Saturday morning. Regular matinee prices apply for both series.
MATH IN MAPLE PARK: The originally scheduled January production of "Main Street Kids' Club: A MathStart Musical" was postponed by a snowstorm. It was rescheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Kaneland Auditorium at Kaneland High School in Maple Park. The show is sponsored by the Kaneland Community Fine Arts Festival and it tells the story of adventure, mystery, friendship and math. Individual tickets are available, but the family ticket is the real steal, letting all members of a family living in one household to be admitted for $25
